Abstract

This study is devoted to the Neo-Assyrian royal household as it emerges from the available cuneiform sources. It addresses the functions as well as the conditions of life and work of the royal household personnel. It clarifies which types of officials, professionals and other employees were active within or on behalf of the royal household. What were their tasks, and what was their position within the royal household and in relation to the king and his family? What departments were in place, and who were the managers? What was the role of lower-ranking personnel within this system? The study also investigates the social and cultural background of the personnel as well as their professional life, including their financial means, the quantity and type of their remuneration, and their career progression. Envisaged also as reference book, the book provides a prosopographical catalogue of the wide range of personnel discussed. As the personal household of the sovereign and the administrative and political centre of the empire, this study of the royal household opens up the immediate environment of the king and his family, but also to the governmental apparatus of the empire as a whole.

Abstract

This book investigates the epigraphic habit of the Eastern Mediterranean in antiquity, from the inception of alphabetic writing to the seventh c. CE, aiming to identify whether there was one universal epigraphic culture in this area or a number of discrete epigraphic cultures.Chapters examine epigraphic culture(s) through quantitative analysis of 32,062 inscriptions sampled from ten areas in the Eastern Mediterranean, from the Black Sea coast to Greece, western to central Asia Minor, Phoenicia to Egypt. They show that the shapes of the epigraphic curves are due to different factors occurring in different geographical areas and in various epochs, including the pre-Greek epigraphic habit, the moment of urbanization and Hellenization, and the organized Roman presence. Two epigraphic maxima are identified in the Eastern Mediterranean: in the third c. BCE and in the second c. CE. This book differs from previous studies of ancient epigraphic culture by taking into account all categories of inscriptions, not just epitaphs, and in investigating a much broader area over the broadly defined classical antiquity. This volume is a valuable resource for anyone working on ancient epigraphy, history or the cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Abstract

La 4e de couverture indique : "For thousands of years, people have expressed their cultural and religious ideas in pictorial and written form. The academic field of epigraphy is concerned with the very same legacies, which have been written, painted, engraved or chiseled on various materials. The group of sources studied includes a range of visual and textual media, such as stelae and statues, as well as rock faces and buildings. Although epigraphy was considered an auxiliary science in the past, it has now developed into an independent and important scientific discipline with a wide range of research possibilities. The contributions brought together in this volume illuminate the geographical area of present-day Egypt and Sudan, while covering a time frame ranging from early rock paintings and monumental pharaonic inscriptions to tombstones from the Islamic period, and modern graffiti in public spaces. Furthermore, they address a broad spectrum of epigraphic topics, theoretical and methodological approaches, and discuss current research questions as well as future perspectives. The anthology thus contributes to a better understanding of epigraphy in Egypt and its neighbouring regions and stimulates further discussions in this field."

Abstract
